These muscles control the movement of the eye.
Lateral Rectus lies along the outside of the eyes and is an abductor, meaning it moves the eye away from the midline of the body. It is innervated by the Abducens Nerve.
Medial Rectus lies along the inside of the eye and has the action of adduction, which is to move the pupil toward the midline of the body. It is innervated unsurprisingly by the Oculomotor Nerve.
Inferior Rectus lies along the bottom of the eye and moves the eyes laterally. It is also innervated by the Oculomotor Nerve.
Inferior Oblique is right below the eye and has the actions of rotation, elevation and abduction of the eye. It is innervated by the Oculomotor Nerve.
Superior Rectus lies above the eye. It’s main action is elevation and it is innervated by the Oculomotor Nerve.
Superior Oblique lies above the eye and has the actions of abduction, depression and internal rotation. It is innervated by the Trochelear Nerve.
